Lone Wolf

Journal 10

Reflecting on my Lone Wolf speech I believe I was successful in the following ways: putting fourth a positive message, talking to the audience in a way with my voice projected, keeping it somewhat casual and adding some humility to my speech. Some things that I wish i couldve done better was have a better memorization of my quote at the beginning and practice what I preach and take a breath when I get nervous. I also wish I had a more professional looking outline, I was thinking that I would hit all of those topics ( which I feel like I did ) but I undertand that it couldve looked better and had more detail. I hope that I was able to display some of my strengths in regards to public speaking and giving speeches in general. In the future I hope I can only go upwards from here.

Final Version-

Final Version-Everyone goes through struggles, but it is how you overcome them that makes or breaks your growth as a person. First you must define what personal growth is- “the process of developing new skills, attitudes, actions, or reactions that can have a positive impact on your life and increase your overall well-being.” (Berkley well Being institute) …. Something that I struggle with as well as many other people in the world is anxiety. The severity of the situation varies depending on how I try to calm myself down. Typically, all I need to do is practice deep breathing to slow down my heart rate and that works. If it is on the more intense side, then I listen to music. Studies show that music as meditation has a significant effect on your mood and improving it. I listen to my favorite artists if this is happening. I Particularly enjoy Luke Combs, Hardy, and Zach Bryan.  The worst thing that you can have is a negative mindset because that causes the downward spiral of negativity. Also, a negative mindset is not a productive one. How can you expect yourself to grow and do better if you are only focusing on the negative aspects of whatever situation you are in? You cannot surround yourself with negative people because that attitude ends up rubbing off on you. There is a quote from a coach at a football camp that I attended that stuck out to me was “show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” One of the keys to personal fulfillment is surrounding yourself with people who want to see you succeed and have your back.  “ This means knowing who your friends are and asking yourself the hard questions like do they really have my back?

The final thing that I want to touch upon when talking about when discussing how to improve ones personal self is forgiveness. Forgiveness is something that you do for yourself, not for the other person. I’ve made the conscious choice to forgive some people that maybe I shouldn’t have, but I didn’t do it for them, I did it for me. The result of that feeling was an overall light feeling, I no longer carry the burden of that past experience. I suggest you try forgiveness.

This speech is about how to improve one aspect of your life, but they do not say how that one aspect can affect the others. You cannot have a skilled professional life and academic life if you as a person are not whole. If you have a bad attitude at work, then you will not do as well. If you approach your schoolwork with the mentality of “I got to get this over with” or “I’m a communications major, why does the university make me take calculus?” My advice is look for the positive, and if you cannot look for the positive, create a positive situation for yourself.

Edited version -Everyone goes through struggles, but it is how you overcome them that makes or breaks your growth as a person. Origional version- Intro – talk about struggles and how that is something that everyone goes through. I would then define personal growth with a quote from The Berkeley well-being institute. The definition is. “The process of developing new skills, attitudes, actions, or reactions that can have a positive impact on your life and increase your overall well-being. I will then talk about something that I struggle with which is anxiety. After that, I will explain some of the methods I use to calm myself down. Those methods are deep breathing, and listening to music, I will then explain the benefits to both. I will also provide an infographic on the benefits of music as meditation. I will then briefly talk about how a negative mindset is not a productive one because if you are being brought down by people or stress or your own negative thoughts you can grow and be the best version of yourself.  My conclusion will be something like this, “This speech is about how to improve one aspect of your life, but they do not say how that one aspect can affect the others. You cannot have a skilled professional life and academic life if you as a person are not whole. If you have a bad attitude at work, then you will not do as well. Reflection 1- In my reflection, something that I realized that I wrote in my first draft that I wasnt writing a speech I was just writing down ideas and thoughts. That is a good thing for getting your thoughts in order but it is not a speech. Once I was told that, I was able to get my thoughts in order and write that speech. The feedack I was able to get from reading it in class was beneficial to me in the following ways, I learned that I need to speak louder and announciate my words better. Also, I was told that my quote from the Berkley Well Being Institute Is good but in my next draft I should add the signifigance of that quote to me. Finally the thord piece of feedback that I got was trying to not look at my ciomputer as much and to look and address my audience.

Best Revire I offered to a single peer: I commented on James’s presentation because in his dry run you could tell he was nervous and stumbling over his words. I suggested he take a deep breath and relax and try to take a calmer approach. Between his dry run and his actual presentation it was night and day, his whole demeanor and presence when he spoke was a complete 180!

Why ist my bes advice- Its my best advice because we as a class got to see is presentation in a better, more relaxed way. Multiple students in our class took to note the major improvement. With that being said, my advise along with other advise from students helped the presentation greatly.

Dry Run Video

Best advice from peers: The best advice given to me was virtually the same thing. That being dont fixate on my screen and project my voice more. I was also given things that I did well like my blend of having an informal yet professional approach to my presentation, and how that allowed people to relate to me.

Why that was good advice: This was good advice because it drove me to push further and hammer down the memorization. It also lead me to add more quotes and hone in on what was working whih was my tone of voice and how I carried myself. this also lead me to add the forgiveness portion of my speech which was able to not only stretch my speech out longer but make it a better overall speech.

Lone Wolf Redemption

In my Lone Wolf project, I accidentally missed the advice portion of the project because I was putting too much attention into the speech portion of the project as well as getting distracted with other things in our class as well as others. I do not have any questions about what I missed, but I do have a list of things I can do to improve my awareness. This is because I was negligent in looking at the whole syllabus more than once. There was only confusion after the fact when I was under the impression that the advice column was in a journal and did not need to be posted to my Eportfolio. Then I acknowledged what I missed.

What I will do better in the future is pay closer attention and be more diligent when looking at the weekly planners and the project syllabus. I will even pin the project syllabus in my tabs section next to my WordPress site on my computer. The steps that I am going to take to make sure that I stay on track are to continue to be on task in class and try to set reminders in my phone to remember to check the syllabus to ensure that I am on task and checking off all of the boxes. This will make sure that I do not forget anything. I will also set reminders on my phone reminding me to work and get back into the old habit of doing things in small chunks other than trying to do a certain amount in one sitting. That old habit allowed me to get better quality work done in a proper fashion. Granted that is easier said than done because that process is better executed when I am not in season and therefore have more time on my hands.

In conclusion these methods of paying more attention to the whole project instead of focusing on the in-class portion and making sure that I have everything done in a proper way. As well as making sure that I set reminders to look at the syllabus in its entirety and take the better steps in the ways to getting myself in the right spot to finish the project in an efficient and precise manner. These are the necessary steps that need to be taken to ensure the product and grade that I receive are up to my academic standard.
