Question 1 How I think the medium helps make sense of the content is the emotions and interpretations one can have by listening to just the audio versus audio with visual representation. By just listening to the first video, the audio track is very static and has a straightforward tone. When you add the visual component then the images displayed make the video have a much more upbeat tone.

Question 2

I believe that the overall message of storytelling and podcasting is to bring people together through the use of having interesting conversations that will tell a story that may have an influence on others. The benefit of all podcasts is to target niche audiences as opposed to radio which was designed to appeal to the masses.

Podcasts can also be in video or audio format. This allows the podcasters who are talking to have complete control of how the story gets told. Shows like “2 Bears 1 Cave” , a podcast hosted by Tom Segura & Bert Kreisher, have both an audio only and a recorded version of their show. I believe this is important because of an episode where Tom finds out that Bert starts his day off with drinking kool-aid. If someone listens to the audio only version of the show then they will not know if he really drinks kool- aid at 9am. But, if they watch the taped version then they will know that as the conversation is happening

Bert hands his water jug to Tom and then he pours it out and proves that it’s really Kool- aid that Burt was drinking.

An unsponsored podcaster has unlimited potential to tell their stories or discuss things in the way that they choose; creative freedom. For example, the BBC4 radio 4 video on Medium is the Message versus Al Jazeera. The Al Jazzera video sponsored by the Qatari government had a completely different feel to it than the BBC4 Radio animation. The difference in the creative freedom is prominent both in the speaker’s tone and in the color pallet they use for the visual component.

Theory/Concept – What is a soundscape?

question 2

A soundmark is the most defining noise within a place.

An identifiable soundmark that is important to me is the soundmark of a roar of the crowd at a football game. I would capture the soundmark by recording game audio and finding the best clip from that. In an ideal situation I would be able to use a good quality microphone to capture that audio.

Question 4

Soundscape: Utopia

The two sonic elements in this soundscape are the sound of the rushing water and the constant chirping of the birds. I think that they stood out to me because both sounds were constant and at a higher volume. These elements give perspective to the soundscape. They sound close.
