Blog Project- JRN

For this Blog project I have chosen to cover the campus newspaper of Louisianna State University called “The LSUReville” and this paper has everyrhing from sports, to campus news, to local news from areas around campus. One other thing that caught my eye was the inclusion of their magazine, as well as student handbook, and yearbooks on their papers website. They post Monday and Thursday during the week. They have many captivating headlines: the biggest of which being ” Former LSU Wide Receiver Kayshon Boutte Arrested in Illegal sports Gambling Investigation.” This is a paper that targets campus life as well as local Baton Rouge news. I enjoy how their website is easiy accessible and how you dont have to put in copius amounts of effort to get what youre looking for on this website.

This story from LSU’s The Reville was titled ” What does Louisiana’s congressional redistricting mean for LSU?” This article looked into the changing of the districts in the Baton Rouge/ LSU area. There is a lot of changes to the LSU area through this district change which is the first time in 30 years. One of the things that is a promint change is ” Formerly in District 6, LSU now lies in District 5, represented by Rep. Julia Letlow from Monroe, LA. She is the first woman to represent Louisiana in the House of Representatives in 30 years. ” (LSU’s the Reville) on eof the major concerns is how this efefcts the voting climate and what that has to do with race. For example, “Louisiana’s total population is just under 4.66 million people, 1.46 million of those people being Black, according to the 2020 Louisiana Census, which is roughly a third of the state’s population. When districts are gerrymandered, it limits the ability of the public to hold representatives accountable, Dohrenwend said.” ( LSU’s the Reville)

This story from LSU’s The Reville was about the opening weekend of LSU’s Baseball team and the performance of the players against their opponents in Central Arkansas. This article featured primarily the interview from Jay Johnson and his thoughts on the games that were played this weekend. He talked about the teams depth saying that “we are prepared to play any type of game.” I think that the writer of this story did a good job in regards to their use of quotes and how that applies into getting the infrmation from somsone that was directly involved. Its a good perspetive that us as fans dont get to expierence. Also I think that the quotes from Jared Jones are great as well, its great to get thoughts from players. The best quote being “I really enjoy the game of baseball and just want to have as much fun as possible,” Jones said about his home runs. “I think [hitting home runs] is pretty fun, so as long as I’m doing that, I have a smile on my face.” ( LSU The Reville.)]]

This story from LSU’s the Reville is covering the upcoming spring footbal season for the LSU Tigers and they are good profiles on these players that we should be watching. This article is in a list format and shows the athletes name, position, and what they expect from the athlete that season. The article was titled “10 players to watch during LSU football spring practice” Something that is also under some scrutiny is the changes to the staff as Head Coach Brian kelly is on his third year and this is the first time that the new defensive scheme is to be installed in practice plans under new Defensive Coordinator Blake Baker. The author Peter Rauterkus gives the reader something regarding the players story or their potantial as well as reintroducing “already known” knowledge on these players performance.

This story from LSU the Reville is about the Mens Basketballs team loss to the Grorgia Bulldogs. This late game effort by Josh Hubbard forced the loss of LSU and contributed to eliminating the tigers from the upcoming SEC tournament. The Final score of the game was 70-60. This article was short and I like how the author says a lot of things without the use of many words. After the overview there was a “More Sports” Section that detailed more refined and formal sportswriting. That would fit the more hardcore fan of college basketball. I enjoyed that the article featured both of these things in their piece. Its a great way to get both audiences of the hardcore fans and the casual observer.

The story that I have chosen for to cover for this week of blog proj is the story of the LSU Womens Gymnastics team winning its fifth straight gymnastics championchip in the SEC. This article does a great job of showcasing individual athletes that want to contribute to the larger sucess of the team. The narrative gets created that although they have won at multiple meets and claimed many titles, they are very team orented and humble. I like how the article gives the interviews of the coach, you can get a lot from what he is saying with the little words that he uses, this team will undoubtedly go far becaue of their humble attitude and their phenominal coaching staff.

This week from The Reville I have chosen to cover the story regarding wether or not the NCAA should allow prop bets on athletes? Per the article “a prop bet is a bet that gets made on a players individual stats. Not wether or not their team wins or looses. This can be detremental to sports betting and the finances of younger college kids and adults. Player saftey is also a major concern, if a player underperforms they could get threatened, or they could also be coerced into throwing a game. Props to the Reville for covering a nationwide issue with collegiate sportsbetting. That not only effects the LSU community but anyone could read this and understand what is going on.
